Understanding Odds Formats
Decimal (European) Odds
Decimal odds represent the total return you'll receive for a winning bet, including your stake. For example, odds of 2.50 mean you'll receive £2.50 for every £1 staked (£1.50 profit plus your £1 stake back).
This format is widely used in Europe, Australia, and Canada, and is the standard format for online betting exchanges.
Total Return = Stake Ć Decimal Odds
Profit = Stake Ć (Decimal Odds - 1)
Examples
With a £10 stake at odds of 2.00:
Total Return = £10 à 2.00 = £20
Profit = £10 à (2.00 - 1) = £10
With a £10 stake at odds of 1.50:
Total Return = £10 à 1.50 = £15
Profit = £10 à (1.50 - 1) = £5
With a £10 stake at odds of 3.75:
Total Return = £10 à 3.75 = £37.50
Profit = £10 à (3.75 - 1) = £27.50
Fractional (UK) Odds
Fractional odds are traditionally used in the UK and Ireland. They represent the profit you'll make relative to your stake. For example, odds of 5/1 (or "five-to-one") mean you'll win £5 for every £1 staked, plus your stake back.
Fractional odds are written as a fraction, such as 5/1, 6/4, or 11/10. The first number is the profit, and the second number is the stake.
Profit = Stake Ć (Numerator Ć· Denominator)
Total Return = Stake + Profit
Examples
With a £10 stake at odds of 5/1:
Profit = £10 à (5 ÷ 1) = £50
Total Return = £10 + £50 = £60
With a £10 stake at odds of 1/2:
Profit = £10 à (1 ÷ 2) = £5
Total Return = £10 + £5 = £15
With a £10 stake at odds of 11/10:
Profit = £10 à (11 ÷ 10) = £11
Total Return = £10 + £11 = £21
American (Moneyline) Odds
American odds, also known as moneyline odds, are primarily used in the United States. They can be either positive (+) or negative (-).
Positive odds (+) show how much profit you would make on a $100 stake. For example, +200 means you would make $200 profit on a $100 bet.
Negative odds (-) show how much you need to stake to make $100 profit. For example, -150 means you need to bet $150 to make $100 profit.
For positive odds (+): Profit = Stake Ć (Odds Ć· 100)
For negative odds (-): Profit = Stake Ć (100 Ć· |Odds|)
Total Return = Stake + Profit
Examples
With a $10 stake at odds of +200:
Profit = $10 Ć (200 Ć· 100) = $20
Total Return = $10 + $20 = $30
With a $10 stake at odds of -150:
Profit = $10 Ć (100 Ć· 150) = $6.67
Total Return = $10 + $6.67 = $16.67
With a $10 stake at odds of +100:
Profit = $10 Ć (100 Ć· 100) = $10
Total Return = $10 + $10 = $20
Implied Probability
Implied probability represents the likelihood of an outcome as suggested by the odds. It's expressed as a percentage and helps bettors assess whether there's value in a bet.
If you believe the actual probability of an event is higher than the implied probability, the bet may offer value.
From Decimal: Probability = (1 Ć· Decimal Odds) Ć 100%
From Fractional: Probability = (Denominator Ć· (Numerator + Denominator)) Ć 100%
From American (positive): Probability = (100 Ć· (Odds + 100)) Ć 100%
From American (negative): Probability = (|Odds| Ć· (|Odds| + 100)) Ć 100%
Examples
Implied Probability = (1 Ć· 2.00) Ć 100% = 50%
This suggests a 50% chance of winning.
Implied Probability = (1 Ć· (3 + 1)) Ć 100% = 25%
This suggests a 25% chance of winning.
Implied Probability = (200 Ć· (200 + 100)) Ć 100% = 66.67%
This suggests a 66.67% chance of winning.
Asian Odds Formats
Asian odds formats are popular in Asia and include Hong Kong, Indonesian, and Malaysian odds. They're different ways of expressing the same probabilities.
Hong Kong odds represent the profit you'll make on a winning bet, without including your stake. They're similar to decimal odds minus 1.
Hong Kong = Decimal - 1
Decimal = Hong Kong + 1
Indonesian odds can be positive or negative. Positive odds show how much profit you'll make on a 1 unit stake. Negative odds show how much you need to stake to win 1 unit.
From Decimal (when > 2): Indonesian = Decimal - 1
From Decimal (when < 2): Indonesian = -1 Ć· (Decimal - 1)
Malaysian odds are always expressed as positive or negative decimals between 0 and 1. Positive values show profit on a 1 unit stake, while negative values show how much you need to stake to win 1 unit.
From Decimal (when > 2): Malaysian = (Decimal - 1) Ć· 1
From Decimal (when < 2): Malaysian = -1 Ć· (Decimal - 1)
Examples
Hong Kong: 2.50 - 1 = 1.50
Indonesian: 2.50 - 1 = 1.50
Malaysian: (2.50 - 1) Ć· 1 = 0.50
Hong Kong: 1.50 - 1 = 0.50
Indonesian: -1 Ć· (1.50 - 1) = -2.00
Malaysian: -1 Ć· (1.50 - 1) = -2.00
Hong Kong: 3.00 - 1 = 2.00
Indonesian: 3.00 - 1 = 2.00
Malaysian: (3.00 - 1) Ć· 1 = 0.67
Asian odds formats are particularly popular in Asian betting markets and are often used for sports like soccer, basketball, and tennis. Understanding these formats can be helpful when comparing odds across different bookmakers worldwide.
